Local Information

Following is some information and tips about Beijing:

Water

Tap water in China is not safe to drink. It is suggested to drink bottled or boiled water. Water boilers (kettles) are generally supplied in hotel rooms.

Power

Electric power in China is always supplied as 220v 50Hz. Sockets are usually two-phase circular holes (Europe Type E/F), but they can sometimes be two-phase flat holes (North America/Japan "Type A") or three-phase flat holes (Australia, New Zealand "Type I"). Make sure you carry a plug adapter and a voltage converter if necessary. Alternatively, you can borrow one from your hotel.

Money

Credit cards are accepted in most places such as large shopping malls and restaurants. It is better to use cash at small stores and restaurants, or outside Beijing. You can withdraw money or exchange currency from any of the ATMs and banks around Beijing (e.g. Bank of China). Banks should not charge you any commission.

Traffic

The best way to get around Beijing is to take a taxi. The minimum charge for a taxi ride is 10 Yuan (around 1 Euro) and then 2 Yuan per km beyond the first 3 km. Don't forget to keep your invoice as it helps to find the taxi you took in case you leave any items in the car.

Hotels

Some of the best hotels in Beijing are located in the center and east of the city, especially around the Forbidden City. Choosing a downtown hotel should not be a problem since taxi fees are relatively quite cheap; it would take you less than 100 Yuan (less than 10 Euros) for a taxi ride between the venue and the city center. However, beware of traffic congestion during rush hours.
